Renaming The Recycle Bin icon:
To change the name of the Recycle Bin desktop icon, click Start then goto Run, write Regedit and press Enter. It opens Registry Editor. Now in Registry Editor go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
and change the name "Recycle Bin" to whatever you want (don't type any quotes).

Locking the desktop
If you are leaving your computer for a while and do not wish to turn it off, but want to assure that no-one else can use the computer while you are away, locking the desktop is the best option.

By pressing WINDOWSKEY+L, you password protect your system just as if you had logged out or restarted the computer. The advantage is that any programs or processes that were running when you locked the desktop will stay open and running in the background, ready for you to resume work or play.

Force windows XP to reboot upon crashing
This registry edit will cause your system to reboot itself automatically upon crashing. This can be useful if you have a reason for keeping your system on 24/7:

Open REGEDIT

Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl'

Edit the 'AutoReboot' value to '1'

Making Google the Default Search Engine in Interne
Open registry editor by going to Start then Run and entering regedit and navigate to following three keys separately and change it as shown below:

Increasing Band-Width By 20%:
Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

To get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your compu
If you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. Here's a recipe for a desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.

Deleting System Softwares
XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

Creating Shutdown Icon or One Click Shutdown:
Navigate to your desktop. On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut). You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.
Use this path in "Type Location of the Item"
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01
If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "C" with the correct letter of the hard drive. Click the "Next" button. Name the shortcut and click the "Finish" button. Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you're done.

Modify autoplay for different types of CD
Windows XP includes the ability to perform different actions depending on the type of CD you insert into the drive. For example, you could set your system to always respond to CDs containing MP3 files by opening Windows Media Player.

To edit the Autoplay properties: Open 'my computer'. Right click on the drive you wish to set and select 'properties.' Choose the autoplay tab. Use the dropdown box to see the various recognized types of CD and choose appropriate actions for them.

Ever wanted to search only microsoft related article or software, and ended up in loosing most of the time. Even Google's general search doesn't satisfy our need of particular search. Hence using google's particular special Microsoft based search result pages.There are times when it is absolutely necessary to look for information on a Microsoft website or in their Knowledge base - & we all know how frustrating that can be :( Google comes to the rescue with a search that checks *only* Microsoft-related sites.

So check this Google's cool search only meant for Microsoft.

Update: It's not that Google offers particular search result page for Microsoft. There are many. You can share with us. Just like Google offers search only for Linux on it's Special Linux search page.

New pricing structure for Adsense Referrals

Finally Google has decided to change some of their pricing structure for Google referrals. After reviewing their feedback for referral products, Google has redesigned their pricing structure. And this time, Google move is in the favor of Publisher. Let take a look at Google new referral pricing system

Changed Adsense Referral pricing system:

When a publisher who signed up for Google Adsense through your referral earns their first $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you will be credited with $5.

When that same publisher earns $100 within 180 days of sign-up and is eligible for payment, you will be credited with an additional $250.

If, in any 180-day period, you refer 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).

Changed Adword Referral pricing system:

When an advertiser you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5.

When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40.

If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus but bonus payments are limited to 1 per year, not bad.

This means, if anyone earn 5$ in 180 days of singing up, then you will get 5$.This also true for those referrals who has already singed for Google Adsense but has not reached 10$.

My thought: Google move will definitely encourage publisher to sell ad spaced for Adsense which will in turn benefit Google.

Google Search History added a new section for Google ads, in the growing list of services available in this interface. This might be useful if you want to buy something, but you want to check other sites before actually ordering the product: you come back to the search history and have the links there.

During my last post I introduced you about 3 column Kubrick template. Well this time I did check its functionality and I was missing two main things which I need it for my site. As I mentioned you previously I am goanna use 3 column template now. But it will take a time so while I personalize my template, I have do some changes in my template and new functionality.

Hey I have come across some of the seo technique. So I want to share those with you. These are not full proof techniques but it will increase your chances of getting indexed and thus more traffic. And IF you know any other points rather than this then please share it with us.......add your points .

There are lots of advanced SEO & marketing techniques, which you will be using but before that you must use these basic SEO strategies before putting your effort on those things.

1. Get-your-domain-name-dot-com/org/net( The main TLD’s are preferred but if you are focusing on local visitors of your country, then getting a country specific extension like .us or .uk helps a lot)
2. Hosting your site/blog on a reliable hosting company.(If you are using free services like blogger or wordpress.com then sooner or latter you will need those services which they don’t provide, so rather than wasting your time in those free services, spend few bucks on hosting & domain)
3. Never put your domain name in the Meta Title > if anything your registered BUSINESS NAME should be here and the last few words of the 60 character title.
4. Never start a word pass 58 characters <>5. Use wordtracker.com to research the proper keywords for your site.
6. Add the robots tag & Place the robots.txt in your root on your server.
7. Make sure to have a site map page.
8. Make sure you have 404 page.
9. Use css instead of color, size and font tags.
10. Change the link buttons or js links in to text links.
11. Include your keywords in the alt tags of images.
12. Use the H1 tag for page headings (you can alter the way h1 displays text with CSS)
13. Get rid of the js in the code and put it in an external file.
14. At the bottom of each page use menus as text links.
15. Make sure your page code is not bigger than 100 K.
16. Submit your site to ODP(make sure to select the right category), Yahoo Dir, and other free directories like gimpsy.com and goguides.org etc.
17. Try to get as much as relevant links you can.
18. Read each search engines guide lines and follow them strictly.
19. Don’t spam & Don’t cloak.
20. Don’t use doorway pages.
21. Pay special attention to your content.
22. Put your competitors on your site and compare your positive points to their negative points (be truthful though).
23. Syndicate your content (if possible you can use Feedburner service which helps a lot in tracking your feed subscribers).
24. Use a good visitor tracking system like Google Analytics.
25. Write unique & interesting contents & use social bookmarking sites like digg.com & del.icio.us.

Remember SEO isn’t just about getting to #1… it’s also about selling "more" once you’re there!

Submit your article to different Directories

Many people feel this option useless. But as far as my opinion is concerned, I will always recommend you to go for directory submission. Generally directories have higher PR and more traffic. People always do this common mistake. Usually blogger is very selective about the Theme and forget about design of the Blog. So, it will look like just another Blog and you lose you reader. If you think readers point of view, nice themed Blog with necessary and easy to use navigations, will always help him to find right information and thus pleasing him. Normally, people get confused between Blog design and Blog appearance which is part of Blog design. So for getting nice traffic and building nice traffic, your Blog should be unique in terms of Blog design & Blog theme. So try to choose some off topic theme which will attract your reader.

Listing down all your popular post under 2-3 categories

This is one of the most important things for novice blogger for retaining your organic traffic (traffic from Search engine) and converting them to regular readers. For getting more idea what I am saying about refer to following picture.

This example illustrates us about importance of main listing categories. This is simple theory, suppose reader comes to your Blog and after reading the content if he finds some meaningful information about hot topics, then only reader will build faith on you. In this way, you can succeed in getting another regular reader.

Guidelines on using this technique:

As you are making these places permanent, it is absolutely necessary to have some popular Tutorial content as they are not time dependent.

Select such quality content which define your Blog and raises your Blog from others.

Make two to three columns and then assign categories to them and place your popular topics there.

Pen Note: I have seen some blogs using this technique in different manner, they categorizes the columns and place latest hot topics there using plug-ins. I think this is also great idea if your posting rate is high.

Yeah it’s another Google move to ban the site. The site was banned because it had “Adsense” in the domain. I saw this on that website.

“Due to recent allegations about my site being banned from Google, I would like to announce following: AdsenseBlackList.com is URL that was banned from Google Adsense program because of the buzz it has caused by using "Adsense" in it. Since that's their trademark, they suspended ads on my pages, and that's one of the reasons why I'm changing it to AdsBlackList.com. Other reason is that, due to your enormous feedback/suggestions, I want to focus on YPN (Yahoo Publishers Network) and MSN Ad Center market in the future.”

So it’s another move from Google. Ok well I personally don’t have any problem with the site whether it’s adsblacklist or adsenseblacklist. Well it’s seems that author will continue to provide the best service, that’s all what we need just now.

Have you ever thought of getting Adsense payment in lesser time period? Just now time required to get Adsense payment is more than two months which is far more than expected. But after thinking about it & discussing with other friends, I came to following conclusion which is very interesting to read.

It’s very simple theory related to such typical questions. Google needs some time to collect money from the advertisers and give to publishers. So it is supposed to be the transition period for payments. But in the age of electronic media, do Google needs so much of time to make payments? Answers seems to more tricky than what we thought of?

Hide a Site in Google Page Creator

I rarely do a search on my mobile phone, but when it happens, I want simple information. All the major search engines have a mobile version, so I decided to compare them.

TGoogle ( google.com on your phone, google.com/xhtml on your computer)

Google offers links to Gmail, Personalized Homepage and Google News and has mobile versions for web search, image search, local search, mobile and news search. Unlike the standard Google search, the mobile optimized version shows smaller snippets, adds numbers in front of the search results so you can use it as shortcuts, and renders the pages using a transcoder.

Windows Live ( mobile.live.com/Portal )

Microsoft shows you information about weather, stock quotes and news. Instead of showing more types of searches, Windows Live has an universal search that groups web search, local search, news search and Space search (Microsoft decided to search only the blogs created on its platform). The result page shows you at most 2 results from each type of search, even if a search for "flowers" shouldn't trigger news results.

Yahoo lists a lot of links on its homepage, including a link to Yahoo Search. Here you can find local search, image search and web search (in this order). Yahoo shows fewer search results and combines searching web pages with mobile web pages. When you click on a search result you get a warning that says "External web pages may not work with your phone" and this is quite true.

Ask shows links to its services, including its various search types. While featuring fewer search results than Google, Ask shows options that can help you expand or narrow your query and more OneBox results at the top of the page. Ask also shows numbers next to the search results and has shortcuts. Ask is also the only search engine (from the four analyzed here) that includes a mobile version for blog search.

Google and Ask.com have the most easy to use mobile versions for their search engines. Google has the best search results, but Ask has many smart answers that can help you a lot.

Yahoo Messenger Virus Detected

Well, It's been official now that some virus have targeted the Yahoo messenger this time. Yahoo messenger this time has been affected by some virus . And this virus is sending the text message to all IM clients.

Conclusions (Confirmed)
1. It uses msinet.ocx and web browser control for communicating with websites or downloading more file.
2. It begins by adding an unusual taskkil.exe in your System32 directory, which is a program to kill System Processes.
3. Creates a batch script located at C:\killav.bat to kill antiviruses.
4. It accesses XXX, where the developer may enter commands for the application to update itselves.
5. It then begins access to XXXX, which shows adbrite ads when opened in Firefox, maybe there is an autoclicking feature encoded.
6. It downloads the executable from YYY which it then renames to svchost32.exe
7. It also downloads the executable at YYYY

The developer seems to want this trojan to be termed “Termex” since he owns the domain Mytermex(dot)com (Donot Visit this Site) and has directories named “Termex” on the server where he hosts his Executables!

The code is no doubt a good one, but I’d have preferred if he must’ve used this knowledge for good. Now apparently this doesn’t seem to affect FireFox/Mozilla and Opera Browsers (Note the apparently) but IE users are doomed.

I am Infected! Now what ?
Don’t Panic Tech Guru has written a nice tutorial to save yourself from this Trojan, I haven’t tried it yet, but from the look of it ,it appears that it’ll work. So go ahead and find it here

Well, Now the real problem starts. After upgrading to Firefox2, we might have noticed that some of your Firefox extensions are not working well or they might have been already disabled.
      I have found a solution to this , if you like me bookmark it.

Let's go!
Quick 'n Dirty Quick Hack, a step by step:
           1- download the extension
           2- change the .xpi into .zip
           3- extract the .zip
           4- open the extracted install.rdf
           5- replace the string 1.5.n where n is some minor number in the maxversion tag
           6- save the .rdf file
           7- put the modified .rdf back into the .zip
           8- change the .zip back into .xpi
           9- Install .xpi file from the open file menu
           10- enjoy...

Also I found , MR Tech’s Local Install extension Power tool as the solution for this problem.

In honor of the Firefox 2.0 release yesterday, today we'll dive deep into the bowels of the fox's config with a handful of my favorite Firefox 2 (and older) tweaks.

The Firefox homepage calls the web browser "fully customizable to your online life," and that's not just marketing claptrap. Beyond the extensive options available in its menus and dialogs, there's a lengthy set of advanced Firefox preferences that can customize the browser to your specific needs. Sure, your brother-in-law's not likely to edit Firefox's default configuration, but you? You're a power surfer and you want your web browser your way.

How to modify Firefox's configuration (about:config)

All this "advanced config" talk got you worried? Fear not, my friend. Here's the deal: Firefox's configuration is a long list of keys and values. To view this list, type about:config into the Firefox address bar. Then, enter the name of the key you want to update in the "Filter" field. The list will narrow to only the entries that match your keyword as you type, as shown.

To modify the value of a key, double-click on the value field and update the entry. To see your changes, restart your browser. Isn’t Easy .
Got it? Good. Let's get to tweaking.

Session restore

Fx 2.0 only: As a blogger and web mail user, it breaks my heart to recount how many times I've composed a long post or email message, then accidentally closed the tab or browser and lost all my work. No more! With Firefox 2, set the browser.startup.page key to 3 to restore your browsing session - with form entries intact! - every time you start your browser or undo close tab after a wayward click. Note: By default, Firefox 2 automatically restores your session if your browser crashes - but this does it every time you restart your browser normally. Thanks for the tip, Arun!

Update: Ryan points out that doing it this way is like swatting a fly with a sledgehammer. To do it the normal person way, from the Tools menu choose Options, and in the Main area, select "Show my windows and tabs from last time" from the "When Firefox starts" dropdown. D'oh! Thanks Ryan!

Tab width before scrolling kicks in

Fx 2.0 only: The biggest interface changes in Firefox 2 involve tabbed browsing. Power surfers who open more than a dozen tabs will notice that Firefox 2 minimizes tabs to a certain width, then sets the excess to scroll off the tab bar with left and right arrows. As someone who often has more than a dozen tabs open, not being able to see them all made me crazy. One solution is to reduce the minimum tab width so that more tabs fit in the bar before the scroll kicks in. The default is 100 pixels; I found that 75 worked better for me - page titles were still readable, but more tabs could fit. Compare 100 width, which fits 7 tabs across at this size (click to enlarge):

To disable tab scrolling entirely, set the value to 0.

Tab close buttons

Fx 2.0 only: Another tab interface change in Firefox 2 is the addition of a close button on each individual tab. I happen to love this, but some hate it, saying it causes them to accidentally close a tab when just trying to switch to it. If you're a hater, revert to the Firefox 1.5 behavior by changing the browser.tabs.closeButtons value to 3. This will not display close tabs on individual tabs, and turn on a single close tab button at the right end of the tab bar.

Modified Value: 3 (revert to Firefox 1.5 behavior)
Alternate Modified Value: 2 (don't display any close tab buttons)

Fetch only what you click

Fx .6 and up: Firefox has this wacky little feature that downloads pages from links it thinks you may click on pages you view, like the top result on a page of Google results. This means you use up bandwidth and CPU cycles and store history for web pages you may not have ever viewed. Creepy, eh? To stop that madness, set the network.prefetch-next key to false.

Limit RAM usage

All versions: Goodness knows I've done a good amount of belly-aching about Firefox's voracious appetite for RAM. (It's consistently the most memory-intensive process on both my PC and Mac.) Happily a simple config tweak got Mem Use right back down to a more comfortable number. Along with the previous prefetch mod, set your browser.cache.disk.capacity to a value that fits your total RAM.

Modified Value: Depends on your system's total memory. According to Computerworld:

For RAM sizes between 512BM and 1GB, start with 15000. For RAM sizes between 128MB and 512M, try 5000.

Turn off chrome tooltips

All versions: I have an irritating Firefox problem on my Mac. When I try to drag a bookmark into one of my bookmark toolbar folders, the tool tip gets in the way and prevents the drop from working. Argh! Like you, I already know what all the buttons on my browser chrome do, so the tool tips aren't necessary. To turn them off, set the browser.chrome.toolbar_tips key value to false. Bonus is, it solved my Mac's bookmark drag and drop problem.

Lastly, though 2.0's default value is a lot more reasonable than 1.5's, you can use about:config to put off that annoying Unresponsive Script dialog on Javascript-heavy web pages.

Update: From the comments, a few more good about:config tweaks:
layout.spellcheckDefault = 2 turns on Firefox 2's spell-checking in input fields as well as textareas. (That means no more typos in Lifehacker post headlines!)
browser.urlbar.hideGoButton=true turns off the rarely-used Go button at the end of the address bar, for more room to see long URLs. Thanks, sister-ray!

While Searching on Net, I found that many people still ask for blogger template. Well in old blogspot (not beta), we were limited to blogspot original templates. But now we can have many free templates for beta blogger.

IE 7 Final Released

Some 18 months after Bill Gates pledged to revamp Internet Explorer, Microsoft is ready with the final production version of IE 7. The new Web browser, which has been in testing for months, is now available for Download from Microsoft's Web site. Those who have been beta testing IE7 will begin receiving the final version via automatic updates this week. Microsoft plans to push down IE7 via automatic update to IE6 users starting next month, though they will get to decide whether they want to install it.

Microsoft has also offered a tool for businesses that lets them indefinitely block users from getting automatically updated to IE7. Schare declined to say how many businesses have downloaded the tool.

Although Microsoft will begin making the browser available through Automatic Update next month, it could take many more weeks to get the application to all PCs in the United States. The software maker is staggering the release, in part to make sure it can handle the support calls. It will make free phone support available, as it has done since the Beta 2 version of IE 7 was introduced in April.

SAVE YOUR BANDWIDTH - BLOCK FLASH AND PICS

1)Goto http://www.bbshare.com/noflash/download/noflash2.zip and download the zip file (it is about 135 kBs)
2)Unzip and install the software
3)After installing you can see its icon in system tray. Three squares, all white when the plugin blocks, and red & green when the plugin is inactive.
3)Right Click on this icon, select "Show main window".
4)Check all boxes there and enable "Scripting(Pop-up windows,Animated ads)"
5)Also check "Launch with Windows strtup" and "Startup minimized in systemtray"
6)Click OK
7)Right Click the system tray icon again and goto Flash-->Block Flash (just to make sure that everything is OK)
8)Also check whether Script-->Enable script is selected

DONE!!!...

Whenever you wanna enable any of these elements temporarily, just right click the system tray icon and open the main window uncheck the required elements, click OK and then, ONLY THEN, open a new explorer window.

WARNING:- As far as I know this plugin only works with IE 6. Not sure about IE 7 or above and below IE 6. And it will not work with Opera or firefox and other non-IE browsers.

10 Ways To Increase NET Speed

Increase Network Speed By 20%

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back.

A nice little tweak for XP. M*crosoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without quotes ""

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Changing the Internet Explorer Title
Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Window Title
Enter what you want appear in the title bar

Make Your I.E As Fast As Firefox

1. click start > run

2. type regedit > enter

3. browse folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\m*cro$oft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\InternetSettings

4. right click @ windows right > New > DWORD

5. type MaxConnectionsPerServer > u can set value (the more higher the no, the more good speed u get, eg : 99)

6. create another DWORD >type MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server

7. then put a high value as mentioned above

8. then restart I.E ...

You're finished.

Speed up browsing by DNS cache

Each time u browse a web site on the internet,

the actual site name u type is resolved to an ip address.

This translation is effected through what is called the

DNS (Domain Name System).

This DNS information is stored in ur computer so that each time u type a web address ,

a record of its IP address is stored so that it can be recalled later without having to retrieve it again.

1 way to speed up ur browsing experience is to increase this DNS cache in windows XP.

u will need to modify registry for this.

Start notepad & enter the following text into it:

d: GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = "7FFF" hex (or 32767 decimal)
specifies the system maximum receive window size advertised by the TCP/IP stack...

e: TcpMaxDupAcks = "2"
determines the number of duplicate ACKs that must be received for the same sequence number of sent data before "fast retransmit" is triggered..

· f: SackOpts = "1"
enables support for selective acknowledgements as documented by Request for Comment (RFC) 2018..default in this case is once again 0.

g: Tcp1323Opts = "1"
controls RFC 1323 time stamps and window scaling options..possible values are: "0" = disable RFC 1323 options, "1" = window scale enabled only, "2" = time stamps enabled only and "3" = both options enabled.

6 better tips for Internet Search

Take a number. A 2004 study by the Online Publishers Association found that we spend 6% of our time online just looking for things. Now that may not sound like much, but if you stop to think about it for a second, it's really too much.

We should be doing what we came to the Internet for — interacting with great content (like this story), engaging in commerce (see all the great offerings on our product pages), or communicating (don't forget to e-mail a copy of this article to a friend).

Sadly, too often we do not.

Instead, we spend — make that waste — about four minutes out of every hour online looking for something. Over an eight-hour workday, that adds up to half an hour. Every week, you'll spend more than 2.5 hours just searching.

If you're running a small business, the numbers can be even more dramatic. With just five employees, you're talking 13 hours, and if you're paying them, say, $30 an hour, that's $390 a week or $20,280 a year. That's enough to hire someone part time, or throw a really great holiday party. (Indeed, another study found that the productivity loss of using general search engines to conduct online research cost businesses $31 billion in 2004.)

That's nothing against search engines, by the way. But here are six ways to cut down on the time you spend looking for something.

1.Be as precise as possible in your search. By using an exact search phrase, you're more likely to get the answer you're looking for. "This helps you find an exact phrase on a Web page and will usually lead to the information you are looking for very quickly," says Rich Kahn, chief operating officer for BlowSearch, a New York-based meta-search engine. For example, a query for "word processor" will yield vastly different results than "Microsoft Word."

Also, use quotation marks, which is common search-engine syntax for "look for that exact phrase." Many search engines also have a box for "Exact Phrase Match" that you can check.

2.Get to know what Boolean searching means, and does. Boolean search terms allow you to get even more precise with your queries. The three main search terms — "AND," "NOT" and "OR" — enable you to include or exclude certain terms in your results. (Most search engines, but not all, accept so-called "full" Boolean terms. Check the fine print to find out if your favorite search engine will do it.)

Full Boolean search terms (we'll get to the implied ones in a minute) can really speed up your search. For example, say you want to get the latest intelligence on laptop battery life. As I am writing this, I did a query for "laptop computer" on MSN Search and it yields 7,561,382 results. But "laptop computer AND battery life" pulls up only 212,544 results (getting closer). If I tack on "NOT power supply," I get only 13,170 results, which is far more manageable. Want to get rid of all the Web sites hawking batteries? Just add "OR for sale," and — presto! — I'm down to 4,062 results.

Boolean searching, by the way, is named after British-born Irish mathematician George Boole, a 19th-century scholar who pioneered the use of "and," "not" and "or" in mathematical analysis.

3.Do it quicker with implied Boolean. Implied Boolean, the cousin to full Boolean search terms, is accepted by virtually every search engine. Plus, it's even faster to use. Stephen Scarr, chief executive for Info.com, a Chicago meta-search engine, says learning implied Boolean operators can shave time off your searches.

For example, if you want to ensure that a particular word is in the results, use a plus sign (+), such as "Henry Ford" + benefactor. If you want your results to exclude a certain term, use a minus sign (-), such as "Henry Ford" -car. For best results, use both. For example, if you wanted to search for Henry Ford's role as a benefactor but weren't interested in cars, the best search term would be "Henry Ford" +benefactor --car. (Note the quotes around Henry Ford will ensure that only that word combination is present in your results.)

4.Build a "nest." Face it, you may not always know what you're looking for. When that happens, nesting can be a real help. Maybe you've seen professional librarians use brackets in their search terms, and you've wondered what they're doing. They're building a nest. For instance, let's say I'm looking for recent articles I've written. But my name is constantly misspelled, even by eagle-eyed editors. Sometimes my byline is "Chris," other times it's "Christopher." And "Elliott" is often incorrectly spelled "Elliot." Nesting to the rescue! If I want to pull up all of my technology articles, I type "Technology" AND (Christopher OR Chris AND Elliott OR Elliot) and I won't miss any of my insightful articles about technology.

5.Give your search engine a workout. Many (but not all) search engines allow you to use advanced terms to hone in on the information you're looking for. Take wildcard terms, for example. A "#" or "*" symbol can sometimes be used within a word to search for all possible variants — so, for example "wom#n" would search for both "woman" and "women." And a search for "exhaust*" would pull up results for "exhausted" and "exhaustion" and even "exhaust pipe." (Some search engines also use "?" instead of "*," but the result is the same.)

Finally, if you want to search for a term that is near another, there's something for that, too. Try using "NEAR" or "ADJ" (each search engine handles these terms slightly differently) to find results in which one word is near or adjacent to another.

6.For complicated searches, get more options. Not all effective searching happens within the "search" field. Invariably, there are more options that could make your queries much quicker. "Look for advanced parametric searching," advises Scott Virkler, vice president for GlobalSpec, a Troy, N.Y., search engineering company. "These specialized engines allow users to enter multiple — and detailed — specifications for the products or services they are looking for."

Clicking on "more options" can turn a 90-minute quest into a one-minute quickie search, Virkler says. For example, on MSN Search, check "Search Builder" for more options. It lets you specify which sites to search, page rankings and language.

These tips can help you get a good start on conducting more effective Web searches. But better results also come from practice, says Matt Rodbard, editorial assistant for Sync magazine, a publication that focuses on technology usability. "People often expect instant success," he says. "But searching, like most tasks, takes a bit of effort for optimal results."
